    Default Moving up rankings tips

    Hi,

I'm currently on page 13-15 on google for a couple of very competitive terms with a new site. I'm asking for the best advice on what to work on most to move up the rankings. Should I concentrate on getting more backlinks with anchor text for this term or add more content with this term included? I know both is the best way to go and I will be working on both but what would be the main focus when trying to move up the rankings? It would give me a lot of inspiration and drive if I saw progress and reached around page 5.

    Thanks

    Rob

The secret form going to # 1000, 100, 50,25, etc is this:

Make sure you have the best possible page for the topic you are wanting to rank for. I know I'm going to get a bunch of guff for saying that, but I assure you that if you ensure you have the best possible page, with the best possible info for w/e term or phrases you are trying to rank for.

Now having said that, links do help, but I know from experience that you can rank #1 for terms without buying links for, without having a well established (aged) website. You can also knock off bigger more established websites by having the best possible page without buy or even getting links.

Now ideally a combo of this approach make your site more sustainable than most other. That is : having the best possible page, with some quality links. Just do nto fall into the trap of "I cannot compete without buying links"

How do you think it's possible to knock a older more established website off of number one with no backlinks, irrelevant of content? To the best of my knowledge, google aren't poker experts, and can't tell if your full tilt page has better info than rakeback dot com's full tilt page, and won't rank it higher for full tilt rakeback until you have age, authority, and a sh*t load of backlinks.

More content with this term? On page which is already ranked or new sub-pages? If you mean pages, you won't help your site and even can ruin your current ranking.

Did you ever heard about cannibalization? It happen when you have multipage pages with same subject and google don't know which one choose to have rank. If you want new pages and you suspect that they can compete against other, you have to choose strongest page you want rank for your keywords and then point links from new pages with this keywords to this most important page.

So you should mix external linking with internal to power up this page? Or is it homepage?

I know both is the best way to go and I will be working on both but what would be the main focus when trying to move up the rankings? It would give me a lot of inspiration and drive if I saw progress and reached around page 5.
If you could show real website we talk about, it would be very helpful b/c I have no idea what onsite issues you have (I'm sure you have if you asking such question)

I do not agree - links + good website structure You can spend $20k as some of us do, and other site can have better SERPS with $2k monthly investment but with well designed data structure.

Now that's another debate entirely. The op asked what was better for rising in the serps out of content or links. We're assuming that his on site seo is fully optimised. Once you've launched your site and optimised your page for poker, adding more pages of content will not help that page rank for poker much, if at all, where as getting backlinks with the anchor poker will send it up the rankings.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure my internal linking and structure is ok so I'll work on getting more links pointing at it and hopefully see some results in the coming months.

Just to add - are there any bad points from linking your own sites together? Does google count a backlink from a site in the same webmaster account less than one off someone else?

It's said that multiple links from the same i.p address carry far less weight that multiple links from different i.p's, but you also have to take the quality of the links into account. Getting a hundred links from cnn would probably carry more weight than one hundred links from seperate, new pr0 blogs. As for interlinking your own sites, some people say that your sites will be penalised for this, but i don't agree. I can think of one massive rakeback provider that does it with multiple sites without a problem.
