Keywords and SEO, where to start?

I am relatively new to SEO and working on keywords. I have a few keywords that have been pretty successful via an adwords campaign, but I'm thinking that it will probably not last very long. I was thinking about trying to get a webpage out there that also ranks high in searches via SEO. Can you guys give me some ideas on how I would get started?

Build a website, generate some content, buy some text links...is this the normal procedure? What's my best ROI in terms of buying links? Also, how long of a time investment am I looking at? I don't think this keyword is being targeted very much right now, so I think i will have a headstart if I get started today. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm surprised that you're already talking about buying links before you've even launched your site. There are literally dozens of ways to garner links without having to buy them.

buying links is not recommended as a first step in a marketing campaign; first do what you suggest yourself or what is in the link above;

for non competitive key words you may not need to buy links at all; then for the tougher ones, it is something that will help you if you have a budget; there is no such thing as ROI for link buying, as these are part of a bigger SEO picture; and yes usually (especially poker) it is long-term.
