I am thinking of buying hosting whereby I can have unlimited domains on one hosting account. I understand this will have an adverse effect on SEO but can someone please tell me what this effect exactly is

Basically when you interlink your multiple sites, they will all have the same IP so google might give those links less weight.
dont do it! if you intend to build your sites, ts worth buying separate hosting as this is better than paying for links later down the line.
Are you guys deliberately leading this guy astray...

There is absolutely no negative impact on your search engine optimization from hosting many sites on one server.
You should not, however, just interlink all your sites. If you have three sites and you want to interlink them that is okay; if you have thirty sites, you would do better NOT to interlink them.
You should think in terms of what provides a positive user experience. Even affiliate sites can still provide great content and a reason for people to hang around and link to a site.

Michael do you see any risk of having too many "similar domains" on one server?

It's not the domains, it's not the content, it's how the sites behave that increases risk. You guys are in a highly competitive industry.
If, in order to compete, you are considering taking some risks, then manage your risks by spreading them across as many resources as you can afford.
In itself, simply hosting a lot of similar sites on one server is not a bad thing. But what are you going to do with those sites? At some point, do you believe a search engineer would look at those sites and conclude you're being excessive? (The most common difference between "spam" and "quality" is excess.)
In SEO, "If 1 is good for me, 50 must be great" is a huge myth that has caused the downfall of many a would-be millionaire.
What are you hoping to gain by hosting a lot of domains on one site that you cannot obtain by creating one domain?
If you're doing it for links, you're taking a huge risk. Just because you hear about people getting away with it doesn't mean that all or most people get away with it.

Michael, if each of those 50 sites were on separate IPs say with a Servint hosting package or HostGators SEO hosting package, would that be more beneficial?

It's just that you could be a person targeting many niches with exact match domains pokerbonus.com pokersite.com pokerdownloads.com pokergames.com great example of sites that can do better on seperate sites.
Not interlinking I was curious about - I'm fairly fearless when it comes to that because I do it naturally. I've just heard people speculate that you can draw attention by having too many similar domains on one server is why I ask, thanks for the post.

Here is how it works: You do whatever you do until the search engine decides you crossed a line you could not see. Then you get penalized.
If you get penalized for one site, you're probably okay for the long run.
If you get penalized for 200 sites, you're screwed for life.
So, again, I ask you: why do you need 50 domains? If they really are targeting 50 different niches, using different content, and NOT linking to each other, you should be okay (assuming you don't do anything else that could get you into trouble).
If you're just trying to beef up your links, I would not advise this strategy. In fact, I would strongly advise against it.
