I think everybody can agree there should be a limit on what to use replay on so it doesn't slow down the game. However, let's face facts here, video replay is needed.

I think its only you that thinks its needed Kush, have you ever watched a match? we already get to see the replays, the ref is part of the game the only place video replays would be used is if the ball has crossed the line. If you read my post earlier looks like there working on that.. Video replays would not work on the USA goal today the ref seen something and made the call that's it IF the assistants on the goal line were there they can tell him here hold on there was nothing there and give the goal. Its not a stop start game like you guys are used to.

Yeah you definitely got robbed, if it wasn't a goal it could have been a penalty imo, but it was a nice comeback and you have to be optimistic about still getting through the group stages.

    No. Not robbed.

The referee saw an infringment and blew his whistle long before the ball went into the net. Like the call or not - that's the end of it - even with a replay

The fact that the ball goes into the next after the players have stopped / or slowed means little because the whistle affects the game.

(much like the inadvertant whistle rule in the NFL (and NHL?) - if the whistle goes - play stops there - no matter what follows).

    -----

Video replays could happen in the future - and should happen at the top level where there are so many good camera angles.

It could work - but it is a major change to the way things are now. But it's not as simple as gettting video coverage.

The referees will need to be trained to let play flow more - and not blow a whistle unless they're very sure of an infringment - and only refer to the replay for major incidents - like goals, penalties or red card offences.

In a case like this - let the play run - and then refer to the tape. Similarly with close offside calls - let it run - and if a goal is scored then go to tape - if not just play on.

    Just my opinion of course.

Obviously I couldn't care less about soccer, but that was just a joke. NOT the way to build your fan base.

There is no excuse for major missed calls that clearly change the outcome in a game in any professional sport. This is 2010, there is all kinds of technology available to prevent this.

Some say, "No replays, it would destroy the purity of the game." Well, the purity of the game was lost when they became billion dollar commercial industries with billions in bets/wagers on every single aspect of the game. Can't have one without the other.

It doesn't make it any less of a fuckup. There was an infringement but it was the opposition team. If there wasn't a goal it was a deserving penalty.

You really are a one-trick pony JD. Myopic in the extreme.

I could give you many examples of US professional sports where the replay rules have not brought a fair call.

One of the most recent that comes to mind is the MLB situation where pitcher that issed out on a perfect game with the final out of the game at first base - obviously made the out - umpire botched that call.

And the "professional sport" with many replay rules sits on its hands and say tough luck.

    -----

There have been several instances of NFL games played with bad calls - but not over-turned despite TV evidence - because the coach is out of challenges.

    Tough luck.

    -----

So here we are in 2010 - and sh!t happens - in all sports.
Get over it and stop wh!ning.

Or is that the poker player in you ALWAYS moaning about a bad beat?!

In these situations they should do just like in rugby: stop the match, watch the replay and take the right decision...

This would make it too boring to watch. Then you have to start making replays for offside decisions, fouls, etc. and I think that it's a major factor why soccer is so popular.
