Default Story from NFL Betting today

I had never seen the NFL proposition before: Will the first score of the game be a safety? At the time I looked at at the odds which were No -99900 Yes +40000 and after rethinking it just now i think this must have a typo where an extra zero got added to it. I was busy and was trying to find an alternate line before kick off but it was the Cowboys/Giants game I came across it. I looked double checking my eyes were correct that Yes was 400 to 1 which it was. I remember saying this has to be +EV - but was in a hurry and didn't even process why other than it just must be. I mentioned to someone "hey if you want a long shot this is a great bet". Busy and with it being a long shot forgot about it.

Of course when first score of the game was a safety it took me about 30 seconds to say ##%&#(&#!!!!!

So just now thinking about it, I searched my spread sheet and found an entry on one of my Super Bowl wagers that said that said 0.63% of scores on season were safeties . Now I'm not sure if the first score is less likely or more likely to be a safety (I haven't looked into it - nor have I looked at this seasons safeties). I would guess "less likely" due to starting field position often being the 20+ on the opening drive. but that's simple logic and haven't reasoned much further. What I am relatively sure is that was a bad line and the intended line was No -9990 Yes +4000 and somehow the bookmaker added an extra zero (I could probably debate this wasn't obvious though as No might be +EV if that was true). 40 to 1 wouldn't of been a bad payday but if it was the line offered I wouldn't have bet it. Also every sportsbook would state line error here imo and pay on 40 to 1 so couldn't really have taken advantage of the mistake. So bad beat turned into acceptable one as the only reason it caught my eye was a line error but being busy didn't spot it as a line error only as a bet I though this has to be worth a shot.

Not even sure this is interesting to anyone as sports betting is pretty emotionless to me, but I did get worked out for a split second there when the first score was a safety. LOL at first I was like man $50 would of been $2K. Then it hit me no wait $50 would of been $20,000. I had already resolved to ugh okay w/e. But then after going back to it now see ah that was a bad line. I can imagine the stress a complete fish betting it might of felt. However with it being -999 chances are it was a virgin line never touched or maybe took a bet equally on both sides; more likely than not no one was harmed or had such an experience, the bookmaker still never knows he offered it and it was just me as the sole person getting worked up for a split second for not having bet it. Of course if I had I would have been the worse one to make that mistake as I'm sure it would have been reasoned I was taking a shot and would have had to deal with an angry supervisor lol.
If you're going to bet US Sports online - I strongly suggest 5Dimes.com or Bookmaker.eu.

Yeah anyone still an atheist after viewing that game and the context of it... If that's not proof I don't know what is haaa

Two things I gained from his wikipedia page:

Tebow was born in Makati City in the Philippines, to American parents who were serving as Christian Baptist missionaries at the time. His mother, Pamela Elaine (née Pemberton), is the daughter of a U.S. Army colonel, and his father, Robert Ramsey Tebow II, is a pastor.[1][10][11][12][13][14] While pregnant, his mother suffered a life-threatening infection with a pathogenic amoeba. Because of the drugs used to rouse her from a coma and to treat her dysentery, the fetus experienced a severe placental abruption. Doctors had expected a stillbirth and recommended an abortion to protect her life,[1] although abortions are illegal in the Philippines, but she remained undaunted and refused having an abortion.
#1 I need to look into that Christian baptist things he's got going.
#2 Tebow is a winner who defies human odds time and time again stating from his birth.

If he wins the super bowl I might start tithing 10% of my money to him and calling him a prophet

Obviously exaggerating with all this but does make for some good TV.

    Hey Prop

I don't know if that was a bad line I mean how often is the first score a safety.

With 256 regular season games 400-1 would be like once every season and a half at 40-1 it would happen 6 times per season.

I don't know how often this actually does happen but I would think average once per season might seem about right. Either way $100 bet on it would have been nice.

As for Tebow WTF guy is killing me on our Prop bet. I guess when you bet against god your going to lose.

Looks like Bodog had this prop last night for the Cowboys/Giants game...

1st Scoring Play in Game will be?

New York Giants Passing TD 4/1
New York Giants Rushing TD 5/1
New York Giants Any Other TD 16/1
    New York Giants Safety 80/1
New York Giants Field Goal 4/1
    Dallas Cowboys Passing TD 3/1
    Dallas Cowboys Rushing TD 7/2
Dallas Cowboys Any Other TD 16/1
    Dallas Cowboys Safety 80/1
    Dallas Cowboys Field Goal 3/1

So, can't see it being 400:1...

These props have low max bets. Assuming max win was $100.00 per wager and the intended line was -9990 you would have to risk $9,990 to place a single max bet that paid $100.00 profit. I doubt the bookmaker is too concerned with juice in this spot. I just looked it up now and this season 1.1% of all scores are safeties. My initial inclination is the "first" score being a safety is a little less likely than the random of all scores. At -9990 you'd need to win 1% of the time to break even. It seems these are probably close the fair odds and again needing to risk $9900 to win $100 I doubt that side would be juiced a ton (assign it and short the side someone is going to actually bet). Also if you kept the juice the same and added it after typoing -99900 then it would explain why it pays less. The error was on the favorite line not the dog. So I'm reasonably sure -9990 or -was the intended favorite price.

    The bet was at 5dimes.

Regarding other comments: Yup, must be you guys fault. If you want to win this prop, quickly get your ass to a Christian Baptist church, repent and promise to donate the winnings. Even and doing good deeds = better than loss.

Yeah that's a common prop I forgot all about. Last season both Intertops and Bet365 always had the safety at 100/1 for both teams so 400 to 1 wouldn't make sense. With 5Dimes offering so much less juice I'm sure 100 to 1 was much closer to their intent. I'm near certain they added a 0 to the favorite's price and then worked from there.
