Default Sports Betting Rhetoric Questions (Basic)

I'm in the process of developing several sports betting sites. I've been having trouble when writing my content though:
    • Use of "punter" - Will using "punter" and "bettor/better" equally throughout my articles alienate anyone? To me a punter is the guy that kicks the football (the pigskin, not that girly black and white ball ). I have no clue if this will confuse Americans or Europeans and I'm focusing on niches that will target both.
    • Bettor or better? - I'm fairly certain that bettor is the correct term but one dictionary says only bettor is correct and another says both. I've also seen many sites that only use better.

Sorry, I know these questions seem stupid. I've been using these words a lot though and I want to get it right. Thanks

Hey I think 1) is fine, everyone gets it. 2) Use Bettor lol... It's Better than Better

Btw, care to PM the markets you are promoting and what programs you are pushing ?

I'm doing this right now, and we could share some tips.

    thanks

bettor is correct, punter everywhere except america is a gambler (to me generally punters bet on horse , bettors bet on sports)

if you need a hand for whos best for various sports from a bettors perspective , i bet them all and can give you a guide josh
    cheers

If you are targeting UK traffic then use "Punter" as that is a general term widely used in the UK for anybody who bets.

Agree with rampchip, for the UK market punter is widely used both in betting circles and national press. For the other, bettor is the correct spelling in my eyes - though I'd probably very really use it as a term in an article.

I'd use both, its one of those terms an American might find odd the first time they hear it but after that its fine. I'm near certain I've sat a bar in Las Vegas and have used the word punter and have heard others use it just the same. While it might not be automatic at first read it becomes part of betting vocabulary rather quickly. If you want to avoid rhetoric that will turn off a lot of people avoid the word "public" and don't use the word "square" much. You're much bettor off saying something like: what a professional sports bettor understands that the average punter (novice bettor) does not... <--- just explained all the terms in the intro and can use punter then on and in small article that link to it etc. if your site has good content and people are returning they'll get use to using punter which again gets picked up pretty easy and becomes part of betting vocabulary.
If you're going to bet US Sports online - I strongly suggest 5Dimes.com or Bookmaker.eu.

I don't like to use punter for an american audience. While all long time bettors understand it, many recreational bettors have no fucking idea.

I guess it depends. If the page is just Bookmaker Bonus Code and low quality content saying: BOOKMAKER IS OFFERING PUNTERS A SPECIAL BONUS THIS WEEK okay I'd agree. If your site will be free flowing and marketing to a global audience and is likely to get free and return visitors, I'd use it. We all at one time never heard word tilt and had no idea what it meant because it's not a word people said much unless you played poker or pinball. punter does not even come close to word I'd avoid use. If worried about it though just work on ranking well for "what is a punter" which will help validate your site again to the reader who is confused
