Most of the content in the thread is really old. What's your current list of the best/most essential plugins?
I like Headpace2 or Gregs Ultra SEO plugin for meta data and general SEO stuff.
Google XML sitemaps for sitemaps. (Google XML sitemaps MU for sites where I have multiple languages).
KB Robots for editing my robots file.
Pages 2 RSS for including pages in RSS feeds.
That's all I can think of off hand. Don't really use too many other plugins these days.

Since we don't use WP for blogs as much as for building sites, I love Custom Post Order it lets us set the order for the posts so that what we want appears on top. We use it for poker-coach.com so that the posts appear in alphabetical order as opposed to by the date that we entered them. It saved a ton of hassle. You can find it on Google or through WP, but I can't post links yet because I'm new.

Ok, let's wake-up this thread with relevant WP plugins, as most of mentioned are for old versions or non-relevant
These are the ones I install right after installing WP:
- CodeStyling Localization - if you need translating theme/plugin/etc. this helps to do it painlessly, straight in WP admin, no need of working with POedit, uploading po/mo files and so on.
- Easy Columns - adds nice buttons to editor for making column layouts in post/page
- TinyMCE Advanced - absolute must-have for quick tables and styling buttons in editor, has some other nice settings too.
- WP no category base - removes /category/ from posts URLs
- WP no tag base - removes /tag/ from tags URLs
- SEO all in one - absolute classic, never found anything better
- WP page navi - adds nice navigation buttons in category/archive/blog pages, instead of Previous/Next links. Needs some code editing though, but very simple, just changing two lines.
- Nrelate or Related Posts Thumbnails - for related posts. First one works perfectly and has astonishing styling possibilities, but does fit only for Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Swedish and Turkish languages, since it uses complex relation identification by content algorithm, not just categories and tags. For other languages, use Related Posts Thumbnails.
- SEO friendly images - configure and add TITLE and ALT automatically to all your pictures
- WP CSS Button (CTA-Button Plugin) - a really nice addition, if your theme does not have buttons shortcodes included. Configure buton color, text, link, placement, target attribute.
- BWP Google XML Sitemaps - very advanced automatic sitemap/siteindex generator and submitter
- WP cleanfix - DB cleanup within WP admin
- WP DB backup - generates and sends/saves database backups according your schedule
- Contact Form 7 - also a classic one, but the best for me
Optional (depends on the website needs) but also nice ones:
- Thank me later - sends a thank you email for comments authors, time/contents/etc can be configured
- Easy spoiler - add spoiler-like areas into posts/pages with one shortcode. Easy install and use.
- Sexy Bookmarks by Shareoholic - good looking social share buttons/widgets with many options and analytics. If these are "too much" I use Really Simple Share.
- Simple Events Calendar - if you need a calendar post/page/widget
- Print Friendly - to add a nice Print icon/text/link in posts/pages
- Redirection - for those needing it, but hating .htaccess
- Wordgallery glossary - if you need glossary pages
- TF FAQ - if you need FAQ pages, visitors can add their own questions, which will be seen in WP admin right away.
- Custom Avatars For Comments or Ravatar - both for more interesting comments avatars. First one lets visitors choose an avatar from given ones for each comment (you can add custom ones); second one has a picture folder, where you can put huge pictures (according your website topic) and it will make a constant avatar from a part of it for each comment author.
- Shortcodes Pro - add custom shortcodes, easy even for not advanced coders
I did not bother to include links as all of them can be easily found by name in WP Plugins Directory. Also, all of them are free![]()
Now, what is your list?
Diversify in health&beauty: lifetime cookies, no country restrictions, realtime reports, guaranteed payments (not a single time late from 2002), up to 50% rev share! Website templates, articles, keywords and product images supplied.
What about Yoast vs an alternative to All in One SEO or Headspace2? Just curious on people's thoughts on it. Also, which ones are absolutely free?
I am currently using these plugins on several Wordpress sites.
- Akismet
- Google Analyticator Adds the necessary JavaScript code to enable Google's Analytics. After enabling this plugin visit the settings page and enter your Google Analytics' UID and enable logging.
- Keyword Strategy Internal Links Keyword Strategy link generator plugin
- Stop Spammer Registrations Plugin This plugin checks against StopForumSpam.com, Project Honeypot and BotScout to to prevent spammers from registering or making comments.
- Subscribe2 Notifies an email list when new entries are posted.
- Twitter for Wordpress Displays your public Twitter messages for all to read. Based on Pownce for Wordpress by Cavemonkey50.
- WordPress Editorial Calendar The Editorial Calendar makes it possible to see all your posts and drag and drop them to manage your blog.
- WordPress Importer Import posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, tags and more from a WordPress export file.
- WP Social Bookmarking Light This plugin inserts social share links at the top or bottom of each post.
- WPtouch A plugin which formats your site with a mobile theme for visitors on Apple iPhone / iPod touch, Google Android, Blackberry Storm and Torch, Palm Pre and other touch-based smartphones.
Of course, these are conversational blogs, not really affiliate sites or anything like that. Still, if you accept comments you should give serious consideration to using Stop Forum Spam. You'll sometimes have to whitelist people but it's very good at blocking spam. You don't have to have an API key for any of the services it checks unless you want to report new spam information to the databases. I do that on one of my blogs.
I installed the Keyword Strategy plugin last year when Fraser Cain asked me to test it for him and review it. I think it's an okay internal linker. Sometimes its choices are quite surprisingly accurate, sometimes they are a little embarrassing.
WP Touch or something like it is a must-have, in my opinion, if you want to reach people on mobile devices. They can still read your site on mobile devices through their web browsers but the text is absolutely tiny and navigation is a nightmare (in my opinion).
I use the editorial calendar to organize my scheduled posts. I set it to show 4 weeks at a time. It acted a little funky after I upgraded to the current version of Wordpress (3.3) but was able to get functionality back by switching to the Twenty Eleven theme, clearing my browser cache, and then switching back to my desired theme. Sometimes I had to clear the cache again.
A lot of the SEO plugins seem to offer basic analytics connectivity. I am not really a fan of All-in-One SEO but Yoast's SEO plugin is very easy to configure and gives you a lot of control.
