    Use this plugin:

WordPress › SEO Smart Links « WordPress Plugins

It does exactly what you need. Completely painless.

I've used this and it works wonders.

You can even tell it how many instances within the same content that you want to link to a certain URL.

Yeah I have as well, but it's not what I need. The plugin works but its way to automated for me. I don't want the same phrase linked throughout. I would rather manually select different phrases and terms.

I will give it a go and try to see if I can manually learn how to edit the mysql. It seems like that would be my best route at this point as I want something to speed up removing links, adding links, editing pages without using the search function. Worst case scenario I screw up and have to start again...

Thank you all for the suggestions - much appreciated

Always make a backup copy (or two, in separate locations) before you try anything like this.

Surely doing a "find and replace" on a mysql is exactly what the plugin does anyway? You can set specific phrases that you want to link and where you want to link them to, as well as the number of instances of each link per post.

You can also try BackWPUp plugin. It can backup your database and works pretty good.

Yes, if you download a copy of the database give your wordpress, the editing and then upload the changes you make will be reflected directly in your wordpress, you just have to be careful not to corrupt the tables in the database because it could not work in the end ...

PS: Always have a second backup

Since this thread has been needlessly brought back...

For anyone who installed SEO Smart Links, it may be worth reading this blog post and double-checking that you are using it appropriately.

Yeah I can see how that would be considered over-optimisation.
