Trying to make a change to a database , problem is i cant figure out what to use to open the file so i can edit something in there.

A .gz file is a compressed file, kinda like .zip... I see them all the time as a mac user. You need to uncompress it before you can view the actual .sql file, afaik. This link should help you go through the motions

If you're a windows user, total commander has plugins for uncompressing .gz files. On Linux it's even simpler, simply use gunzip.
