It seems most people are switching over to Platinum SEO pack right now. I am using it on some of my sites as well and I think it is working well.

Interesting... any other thoughts/experiences on the new seo pack?

And btw, found out it dosent overwrite the describtion you have entered, it puts in a describtion if you havent entered anything.

I take a real dim view of all these so-called "SEO plug-ins". Some of the things they do should be essentially harmless (like title and meta description generation). But their misguided attempts to "avoid duplicate content" just leave me cold.

You should not be relying on a plug-in to decide for you which content on your site is indexed. Wordpress will by default give you the ability to determine which content is indexed. You can turn your archives on or off and structure your posts so that they have their own pages (or not).

A well-designed blog will allow search engines (and users) to crawl/browse their pages without attempting to block anything like "duplicate content".

A few people in the SEO community have conveyed this totally screwed-up idea to the rest of the Web that you want to concentrate your PageRank in as few pages as possible. That is absolute nonsense and only a completely incompetent SEO would argue for something that stupid.

(Internal, not Toolbar) PageRank is used to determine crawl priorities and to determine which index your pages are placed in. You want to spread your PageRank as far through your site as you can, getting as many pages into the Main Web Index as you can. Concentrating your PageRank in as few pages as possible does the exact opposite.

Your rankings in competitive queries will NOT be decided by PageRank -- they will be decided by link anchor text. You cannot spread link anchor text across a site; you CAN spread PageRank across a site.

Using your internal navigation, you need to set up multiple internal links to as many of your pages as possible so that the search engines find them through as many links as possible. Your pages will otherwise fall out of the Main Web Index quickly and frequently, diminishing your search visibility.

These so-called "SEO plug-ins" cause more harm than good in general with their assumptive behaviors because they block crawlers from finding and indexing good, valuable content.

If you want to use plug-ins to simplify your on-site optimization, I recommend using plug-ins that provide the following value:
    • Ensuring unique page titles
    • Ensuring unique meta descriptions
    • Allow override of any function or feature
    • Adding links to related or similar posts
    • Enabling efficient caching
    • Handle redirection efficiently and correctly
    • Creating tag clouds
    • Add bookmarking and sharing links

You should NEVER allow any plug-in to insert "noindex", "nofollow", or "noarchive" on any page your blog or CMS generates. If you don't want the page indexed, don't create it.

It would be better to go without an "SEO plug-in" than to use one and let it screw up your site the way they do just out of the box. The guys who write these plug-ins don't know enough about SEO to be creating these kinds of tools.

Make liberal use of your tagging and categorization abilities with blogs and CMS systems. Let them be crawled, indexed, and found.

Firstly, you found the answer to your original question...

I totally appreciate what Michael said about what an SEO pack "should" contain. I think these plug-ins simply make us "sleep better" at night, and I am guilty of having the plug-in just because it is easier to get title/meta inserted.

I've used both of them and would use either again on another wp driven site or blog - if only for the above reasoning. If I had to criticize either one of the two plug-ins, it would be that the All-in-one doesn't have it 100% together with the canonical urls yet, and the Platinum is a bit intrusive (attempts to add itself to the wp footer as a link).

The biggest difference I've seen between Platinum and All-in-one is that platinum eliminates the need for the redirection program for adjusting the permalink structure.

Plug-ins probably work best for people who know very little about site optimization and on-page optimization. But eventually as you learn you pass a threshold where you can do it better yourself.

A lot of people in these forums seem to be pretty knowledgeable about fundamental on-page and site optimization. I'm not sure an SEO plug-in would do much for a lot of you, except maybe save some time out of your days, as long as you don't let it screw up your sites with bad assumptions.
