For wordpress, I use WP Database Backup. You can set an automatic backup schedule and have backup files sent via email daily, weekly, monthly, etc. I just have a dedicated email address where all site backup files are sent daily.

    I use WordPress › WP-DBManager WordPress Plugins
I'm fairly sure it just does the same things that the plugin NickM uses.

That's just for the DB right? What do you back up the web content with? Do you just do it via cPanel?

Yeah for the webfiles, you could just use FTP and copy them to a USB stick...

There's a cron job I run every night on my server to back everything up. I also use Syncback Pro which I run on a separate workstation here.

I had tested out WP Database Backup, but found it would choke on big DBs. That was about a year ago though so may have improved since then(or maybe it was an issue on my side).

What is "web content?" Do you mean for static html/php based sites?

I found this: Joomla!ŪPlug - Home - XCloner works both with Joomla and Wordpress. It can backup, but also clone your site to another URL.
Kind of useful for example if you want to install a second or third language in a subdirectory - clone it, re-install in the new dir and then just translate the content there.
I tried it and found it quite easy to work with. But I haven't tried it with real large databases yet.

    Default Backup

If you have access to the SQL server you can make a backup directly from there.
