Seasonal Templates

Hey everyone,

Let us say we are going to design a new template, what do you think the added value will be of having seasonal copies of your template, ie a christmas version (or just winter), maybe an easter (or spring), summer holiday and halloween (or just fall) versions?

I for one think it will entice the visitors even more, maybe on a subconscious or even conscious level. Although I only think it will entice them if it is not done cheesy.

Well i think its pretty nice if the logo could change a bit, like pokerlistings do when its winter.

Thats just my opinion, but if you could do the whole template without make it look too much then go ahead.

I think it's neat when sites change their templates, and I always regret all my customizations that make that so hard for me to do.

What customizations are you talking about? But right now if you started from scratch you could implement this right?

Put a pumpkin on the header banner, or a sprig of mistletoe, or whatever global season is occuring.

But unless you are specialising in selling something that is seasonal, doing anything more than that is just majoring in the minors - it's not going to help conversions - and a full makeover inevitably does took twee.

Spend the time on related seasonal content and sales pitch instead.

Just be aware that if you celebrate a regional event to the exclusion of other regions then you're possibly negatively impacting the global reach of your site.


(Eg Because we have a big asian reach on our site I make sure that we have something for Chinese New Year that is the same level of effort as traditional New Year)

I think the idea of changing up the templates is a great idea, especially if you have an in-house designer or are a designer yourself. Although it may not increase conversions, it is a great way to build your brand and put some personality behind your site.

I do agree that targeting holidays like Christmas or Easter may be tough considering the diverse demographic of traffic. Although on English pages, you shouldn't have any problem making a template based around the season.

Personally I love the idea.
