    Default Testing website in IE6

    Hi,

So another webmaster notified me of the fact that in Internet Explorer 6 my site looks crappy. When using browsershots.org then indeed I see a crappy site. So now I want to correct it, but I can't just install IE6 and am struggling to get it working with Virtual PC from Microsoft.

Is there an easier/quicker way to test my site in IE6 I overlooked?

Microsoft has a tool called Expression Web Super Preview, which is supposed to make it really easy to compare how your site will rendered in IE 6, 7 and 8. I haven't tried it myself yet, since I have a different setup (see below).

If you take the time to try it out, I would really like to know how well it works

I use VMware for testing websites, and as an easy way to get a "clean" looking computer when I record videos.

I think the easiest way to get started is to download a trial of VMware Workstation and create some virtual machines.
VMware Workstation - Run Multiple OS Including Linux on Windows on Virtual Machines

After the trial expire you can use VMware Player (free) to continue using the virtual machines you have created, but you can't create any new ones.
VMware Player: Run Windows 7, Chrome OS - Free Download for a Virtual PC

It may take a little while to download and install, but it really made my life easier after I started using it.

For windows there is an app called Multiple IE's that you can use to run IE6. I haven't been able to get it to work in Windows 7. But works fine in XP.

For mac you would need to run a virtual machine.

Well, I didn't even need to try your VMware solution as I think I have everything sorted out now using this program. It took only a minute to download and install.

You can render a page in two browsers simultaneously (choosing between IE 6, 7 and 8) and just smack the refresh button every time you hope to have made the magic adjustment in your css-file that will make everything fall into place in both browsers. It's all static though, so you can't test if your sortable tables work properly and whatnot. Also, it helps if you have a nice big fat screen so you don't have to scale down below 100% to view both pages next to or above each other. There's a handy feature where you can just click an element and its exact size and position in pixels is displayed for both browsers you selected to render your page with.

I found a cure for the lousy looks of my page in IE6 pretty quickly, so this is just a turbo review. Hope you don't mind. I doubt there are many more hidden features though as there were only a few buttons to smack, so I might have covered quite a bit already.

Oh, and thanks again for the helpful responses.
