menu Link Targets

Just wondering what the right setting is for the navigation links in your menu,

I know for affiliate links i set them to blank so they open into a new page without leaving my site.

Now my internal navigation links, dont know if i should set them to anything, right now i have them empty, would it be better to set them to say, top or self or parent.

i really dont understand anything about this so would appreciate some suggestions.
