Default Firefox / IE compatibilty issue

I could really do with some help here.

I'm trying to get a new site off the ground - I thought everything was going fine until I viewed it on a friend's computer in Internet Explorer for the first time.

The site contains a right sidebar which displays correctly in Firefox, but appears beneath the main content section in IE.

Is this some sort of compatibility issue with the CSS coding? Or could it have something to do with the 'include' commands I'm using in the PHP file?

If anyone knows their way around this type of issue, I'd be more than happy to give them the URL and copies of the CSS file if you think that would help ... I just want to get on with the job of writing some half decent content!

Thanks loads in advance to anyone who might be able to help ...

it's going beneath due to width issues in yous css layout - nothing more than that.

If it was IE6 that did it - I wouldn't worry - if they can't work out how to download IE7 or even IE8 you've got no chance of getting a poker download.

Thanks Oz - that made me smile

So is it a case of simply extending the width of the site for both FF and IE? Or do I need to add an additional line to the CSS specifically for IE?

Nah - It's a css property that isn't full compatible with IE - imo usually something to do with "position: relative" or "position : absolute" or "diplsay: block" etc

If your using some javascript stuff like jQuery then errors could be stemming from there.

If you want me to have a look for you just PM the site - I'll have a look after golf tomorrow.

Every time I've had this issue (where a sidebar displays below the main content in one browser but not the other), it's been a spacing / border issue.

IE and FF calculate div widths and borders slightly differently. I don't remember exactly how it goes but it's something like this.

FF -> width = defined width of div (borders are subtracted from this amount)
IE -> width = defined width of div + border width

Maybe check that out and see if that's the issue.

I certainly will Thanks Elsidney - I'll drop you a PM now.

Thanks too Mike and Oz ... I'll have a check on the widths. I've just got comfortable with CSS - now it looks like I"m going to have to learn the compatibility issues
