Poker To Sports Betting – 5 Mistakes To Avoid

One simple way to diversify as a poker affiliate is to move into other gaming categories and a sports betting is a natural route to take for many marketers. It’s also a very good option; there’s plenty of good programs to work with, loads of categories to target and plenty of content options.

However, many who make the move from poker to sports betting affiliate marketing make several key mistakes, and boy are they common ones, so in this guide I’m going to cover them and hopefully get you thinking about how you can make the transition more successful for your business.

sportsbetting

 #1 Tips Content

Producing a bunch of betting tips/picks and previews for your new sports website seems like a logical step. There’s loads of events to cover and you can promote the best odds on your tips which should generate a few real money players right?

Well… Technically you’re not wrong but you’re not really going to get the results you want either, unless you like about a 1 in 1500-2000 unique visitor conversion rate. Making tips traffic pay is difficult but if you’re going to make tips/picks a big part of your strategy you should focus more on capturing your visitors email address than you should on trying to push them to a sportsbook. You can then remarket specific offers or bonuses to them which should show a much better long terms ROI.

Instead why not try something a bit more unique like the podcast like this site or if you’re not keen on having your voice heard written interviews with known pundits or tipsters.

#2 Targeting Sports As A Niche

Lots of new sports affiliates breakdown the category in their own minds by the different sports that are available to bet on thinking they’ll build one site about football, one about tennis, one about golf and so on and so forth.

If you’ve been a poker affiliate for any length of time you’ll know that keywords like ‘Omaha Poker Strategy’ or ‘Rules Of Texas Holdem’ aren’t going to bag you the signups you’re looking for (well certainly not at a high conversion rate anyway).

You are much better off isolating your current high converting content and seeing how that would directly translate to a different vertical instead of approaching the vertical from a clean slate perspective. The same kind of keywords which convert for poker affiliates, when logically translated, can convert for sports affiliates as well.

#3 Working With The Wrong Programs

Just because your poker affiliate program also offers a sports betting platform doesn’t mean that’s instantly a program you want to be working with. Similarly, just because one program offers a great starting revenue share deal doesn’t mean you need to be pushing them hard in your top spots.

If you’re promoting to a US based audience, then your options here are going to be limited but if you’re outside the US then there’s literally thousands of different operators to promote.

Player retention is a huge deal in sports in the UK right now. Every weekend bookmakers are pushing new enhanced odds promotions to try to poach custom from their rivals but beyond that what have the got available to their current customers? Do they offer live streaming, cash out in-play, any loyalty bonuses, promotions that target current players and a wide enough range of sports and events to keep punters happy?

Player value from someone referred specifically for an enhanced odds promotion is way lower than if you’ve sold them on an option because of review or recommendation.

#4 Assuming Player Value Is Low

For some reason there’s a common misconception that sports offers a lower player value than casino and poker traffic. For casino that’s very much true but sports traffic is worth at least, and likely more, than poker traffic. Even more so now the poker boom has slowed right down.

You do not want to take CPA as a sports affiliate unless you are entering the market with a very short term strategy or you need to pay your PPC bills. Revenue share at programs which have good player retention is worth so much more.

Betting sports is more widely accepted in the vast majority of countries than casino or poker. It’s definitely considered more socially acceptable and less degenerate. There’s also a crazy amount of sport taking place and if your referrals are betting on one sport you can bet your bottom dollar their betting on others.

Player value is good.

 #5 Giving Up Too Soon

This is a pretty common mistakes made by affiliate marketers and webmasters but it’s even more apparent when someone moves from being a success in one space to a new player in another.

You can’t expect the same results straight away when you enter a new competitive niche as you’re having in the niche you’ve likely worked in for a number of years. It takes time to get to know the type of content to produce and the keywords which will refer your highest value players.

There’s way too many sports betting affiliate sites out there which clearly haven’t been updated in a long time. If you’re going to diversify you need to give yourself at least a year before you can make any kind of judgement on whether or not your move has been a success of failure.

SEO Tips for 2016

1. Optimize for Mobile

This may seem obvious to most of you, but keep in mind that for the first time in search engine history, more searches are being made via a mobile device than from a desktops. You need to be sure your entire website works on smartphones and tablets, and if you have an app, make sure it’s works correctly. Otherwise you will lose rankings, visitors, and revenue.

2. New Media works and ranks well

Have you noticed everyone is doing videos and podcasts now? There’s a good reason for this, more people are using mobile devices, and it’s easier to convey information using videos and audio. It’s as simple as that, this type of content is very popular and growing fast. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be writing content anymore, but you need to expand to other platforms as well.

Best of all you don’t need expensive software or have video/audio editing skills, there are a ton of easy to use options for rookies, and you need to take advantage of them all!

3. Get Serious About Social Media

I’m still amazed serious affiliate webmasters don’t have a serious social media presence. Maybe you thought it was a fad? Maybe you thought it would pass? Maybe you just don’t like social media? Regardless, it’s time you take social media seriously, and understand it can and will make you money if you put the time in. As webmaster we put so much effort into writing new content and advertising on various websites trying to attract new visitors and customers, but social media sites already have millions of potential customers. You need to put that power to use, and get your social media presence established now!

4. Conversion Rate optimization

This was the buzzword in 2015 among marketing sites and SEO’s, and for good reason. If a websites gets traffic, it can and should be making money. No doubt high traffic is great, but it’s not a requirement to generating revenue. Often websites have poor “Calls To Actions” that need changed, tweaked, or completely re-done.

Have you split tested your CTA’s? If not, you are losing money! Simple as that. Check out our article and video: Conversion Optimization

 5. Single Keywords Are Out!

In years past we all know that one and two keywords were all the rage, if you could dominate for a good strong keyword, you were set. But as search engines and searchers got smarter, a new trend has developed. Here is an interesting stat for you:

Seventy-five percent of search queries are between three and five words long

The search engines have figured out that if people search for the word ‘poker,’ or any one- or two-word query, they don’t get the results they want. It is just too broad of a search, and there are too many possible results.

To get quality results that are most likely to answer their question and give them a quality result, they have to go to three, four or five word search queries. As content creators, when you’re thinking about optimization, you have to think about that. That should also be a consideration when writing headlines and page titles as well.

Keep in mind even though the late year holidays are here, during the holidays people have extra time to search the web, looking for good poker and casino offers, or doing last minute shopping. The web never sleeps and takes vacations, and webmasters like us can never fall behind.

Beginner’s SEO Checklist

Below is the beginners SEO Checklist guide, and if you follow the checklist, you can be confident you are on the right track. Consider this article Part 1 of the Fundamentals of SEO.

  • Title Tags – The #1 Most Common Mistake is not customizing your Title Tags on EVERY PAGE/POST
  • Description Tags – Not all search engines use these, but snippets do show up in search results.
  • Keyword Tags (Although google Doesn’t check KW’s anymore, remember google isn’t the only SE).
  • Content is king – Make sure all of your pages contain solid content. The home page is your most visible page and should also contain you most important key phrases. Don’t have a page of just images and tables!
  • Updating Your HomePage – Changing content on the home page gives the engines more to feed on.
  • Keep it Fresh! – Be sure and Display a “Date” or “Update On” spot on each page. Trust me
  • Create internal links – Use strong anchor text in hyperlinks that point to various pages within the site. It’s like setting cookie crumbs on every page so the hungry spiders will follow the crumbs.
  • Images –  Use the alt tag on all pictures to tag photos with key phrases. Name the image file with the key phrases too. Key info can be display even if image loading is off. The alt tag appears in code for search engines to read and to the human eye on photos when you scroll your mouse over an image.
  • HEADERS <H1> The H1 and H2 heading tags are used back when sites were hand coded -Web designers don’t need this anymore but search engines can see the H code phrases in headlines, which boosts visibility.
  • Content is king but Keep it simple, stupid – The best website copy is easy for a visitor to comprehend and it’s easy for engines to detect. Be clear with key phrases in copy whenever you can.
  • Standardize your url’s – You know that http://yoursite.coom and www.yoursite.com are the same but search engines may not know this. If your URL’s don’t point to one main domain, fix that ASAP.
  • Site Maps – Create an HTML sitemap with text links with strong key phrases to boost content and links. A Sitemap is basically a table of contents for the engines to crawl. Also create and submit XML site maps with Google Webmaster Tools.
  • Use Google Analytics – This contains a wealth of information about your website and more importantly, your visitors.
  • Use Google Webmaster Tools – I’m shocked when a webmaster does not use GWT. This not only contains keyword search information and rankings for your website, it also allows you to submit sitemaps and best of all shows you if there are any coding or malware issues on your website. Just a huge amount of vital information that you need to know!

It’s as easy as that! Use the SEO Checklist above and make sure you are doing the easy basics. This is the bare minimum you should be doing with your website. In the next article in this series we will cover some advanced SEO Tactics.

5 Tips to Negotiate Better Affiliate Deals

One of the most common questions I hear is “How Can I get a Better Affiliate Deal?” One of the biggest kept secrets in the affiliate industry is that getting a better revshare or CPA deal is usually as simple as asking for one. There are literally dozens of programs you can invest your time and money into promoting, so as a Poker Affiliate YOU have the leverage.

Keep in mind Affiliate Managers are under the same pressure you find at other non-traditional jobs. They need to increase their numbers and get their brand/program promoted on more websites. At the end of the day, they need you even more than you need them.

5 Tips to Negotiate Better Affiliate Deals

The video below takes you through 5 simple steps to getting better affiliate deals for poker rooms, casinos, sportsbooks, and daily fantasy sports programs. By the end of this video, you will have the knowledge you need to get a better affiliate offer for your business. After all, isn’t making more money the point of this business?

5 Steps To Negotiate Better Affiliate Offers

A Quick Guide To Effective Link Building

We all know how competitive the gambling industry is, after all this is a multi-billion dollar market which means search rankings is a day-to-day dogfight. Good design, good content, and bonuses are only going to get you so far. Making money long term means you need to compete for search terms that will bring viable players to your website.

If you have been in this industry for any amount of time, then you have seen plenty of junk websites ranging from poorly built to hard core blackhat sites. The same goes for link building strategies, you will find everything from lazy attempts to what I call “waste of money” strategies.

The good news is that building quality backlinks is not as hard as it seems, and if you are willing to get creative then you can get quality backlinks that you can be proud of. When it comes to Link Building you should be focusing on quality over quantity. One or two links from link farms or sites that are obviously selling link space can not only negate all the good links you recieved, but it can also get your site penalized.

The Do’s and Don’t of Link Building

As mentioned above, a few bad links can ruin your website and eliminate your affiliate income overnight. To help ensure that never happens to you, I’m listing a few affiliate link building tactics you need to avoid at all costs.

The Don’ts of Link Buying

  • Don’t buy links from sites known for selling links – These are easy to spot if you are looking.
  • Don’t SPAM links to your sites in blog comments or forums – These links are usually no follow anyway, and regardless they are low quality
  • Don’t hire an agency to do your link building for you – I have never heard anyone talk about a positive experience after they hired a company to build links for them. Ever….
  • Don’t bother with website directory link exchanges – Maybe this was effective 10 years ago, but it’s not now.
  • Don’t focus too much time of gaining backlinks – Sure links are good, but your time is better spent adding original content and optimizing your calls to actions.

Now that we have spent a few minutes discussing the “Don’ts” of getting backlinks, let’s talk about some creative ways to get some quality backlinks.

The Do’s of Gaining Backlinks

Notice that I didn’t say “Buying backlinks”? That’s because some of the best links you can get are ones you don’t pay for. Paying for links is one way to get links, and I’m not saying you should never pay for a link. But there are some creative ways you can get good backlinks, and not spend your hard earned money.

Here are some creative ideas for getting backlinks to your affiliates websites:

4 Tips For Getting Backlinks

#1 – Ask A Fellow Affiliate – One of the best links I’ve ever gotten for my sites was from other affiliates I know. I’m not talking about the ‘ole “directory link exchange” type deal, but actual in-content links. To get good links like this, ask someone. It’s that simple! Find a fellow affiliate who has a site similair to your, and see if they are willing to exchange links, but make sure it’s a good link on a inner content page. These types of links are not spammy looking, they are relevant, and your users will thank you.

#2 – Create An Infographic – Although infographics are not as popular as they were a couple years ago,if you put up some good information, people will read it and people will share it. Best of all it’s very easy to make your own infographic using infographic builders. Simply pick a topic, add the information you want to display/share, and add the link that is displayed in the embed option. Simple and effective.

#3. Write A Free Article For A Website or Blog – Everyone loves good/free content, and Everyone loves solid backlinks. Try this, write an article about a topic of your choice, and make a post on the PAL forums and give it away for free (backlink included of course) . As long as the article is good quality, someone will snatch it up in minutes and you have yourself a great in-content backlink.

#4 – Press Releases – There are a small handful of good PR websites, and they are not cheap. The advantage of these are they they do reach a large audience, and because of the higher price, they maintain a high level of respect, weed out the spammy junk, and the Do-Follow links count.

The Foundation

These 4 tips for link building are a good starting point, and I’m sure you have some other tips and tricks to get yourself some quality links. Again keep in mind you do not need to get hundreds of links to be successful in the affiliate gaming industry or any other. Of course they do help, but most important of all you need to have a website with solid content and a good design.

If your foundation isn’t strong, then no amount of links can help you.

Building Relationships with Affiliate Managers

Special thanks to Mark who is the owner of Slot Machines Online and a long time Poker Affiliate Listings Member who wrote this article. Mark gives some great Poker Affiliate Tips on how Building Relationships with Affiliate Managers is key to long term success!

On my first conference, few years back, I was extremely surprised to hear that many affiliates don’t actually talk to their affiliate managers. I have to admit that they were similarly surprised that I do.

The purpose of this article is to elaborate how, in my opinion, we can “use” the AM’s to improve our results, get new ideas and generate additional value. This business is about establishing relationships.

I assume that most of the readers here are experienced affiliates, probably much more than me, I’ll mention only briefly some basic things that AMs can offer and then focus on more interesting aspects.

The Basics

  • Content ideas: AM’s can generate a wide range of content ideas – special promotions, new games, other news and more. Some you can get by signing up to casino newsletters, some you won’t.
  • Marketing materials: I’ve noticed that most affiliates, when they sign up to a new program – they would pick the marketing materials themselves without asking their affiliate manager. I find it a bit strange… Each program and affiliate manager knows on some level which banner performs better than the other, which link is better to use for slots traffic and which for blackjack.

It’s true that the traffic of one site is not similar to any other and you will have to test things for yourself, but not to use this information is just a waste of opportunity.

Getting “Inside” Information

If you ask almost every Affiliate Manager (AM) where it’s better to place their brand – the answer will be on #1 spot on every page. That’s why most of us will never ask that question. That is a shame because almost every affiliate manager, except the really new ones, can estimate from which pages they will convert better and the other way around.

In my opinion, the way to solve it is by asking to name specific pages of my site where he or she expects the best results. If the answer is “everywhere”, then my answer will be that I can’t place them everywhere and he needs to choose. Sometimes I’ll ask to choose a market, sometimes a game type and sometimes something else, but the idea is the same. The moment you take “we convert well everywhere” of the table- they will search your site and figure out the pages where they can do well.

Of course it’s not perfect science, but there are no cons against it and in many cases, it will save few months testing things yourself. It’s all about gather “intel” and keeping a conversation going with your affiliate managers.

Keeping In Touch

It’s pretty simple: from time to time, drop and email to your AM and ask what can be done to improve the results, but instead of a general email, try to be a bit more specific , otherwise you might get a “Place us on #1 spot” type of reply. Make the AM’s work for YOU, after all they are here to help, we are the ones doing the hard work!

Naturally, not all comments will be relevant and worth your time, but it might surprise you how many will. I had affiliate managers point out that I have them on game pages that they no longer offer, expired offers,  letting me know that one of the brands on my US online casinos page that left the market and even not related things, such as broken links, mobile appearance and of course the latest promotions.

* To get additional benefit, you can send the email just before going to a business trip or a vacation. That way someone will pay more attention that everything goes well while you are away.

For example:

Hey, I’m going away for a week. When I come back I would like to discuss if we can somehow improve the results. (short version)

Can you please take a look at the stats and your listings and suggest what we can do better.  I have you on a dozen of inner pages as well, but I am not sure those are the best ones for your casino. Any suggestions would be welcome. (longer version)

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for More

This point is pretty straightforward, but decided to mention it anyway because it took me almost 2 years to find out that it’s an option: From time to time, you can ask your affiliate manager to do something special in order to convert your signups. I have had great luck in getting special things just by asking. These include:

  • Custom Landing Pages
  • Faster Clearing Bonuses
  • Special Freerolls
  • Monthly Player Drawing

Just drop an email to your AM, ask him or her if maybe they can send some special promo to convert your signups, or send out a special email to my players to get re-activate older players tagged to me.  Naturally, not all programs will do that for you and it mainly depends on the size of the brand and how important you are to them, but you will be surprised how many will agree. Every time it was done to my signups, I saw an immediate spark in conversion for 2-3 days. Do that 3-4 times a year and it will get you +5%.

Help Your AM with Feedback

In the past, I was working in a big company with many clients. With some, I felt that they are open to comments and ideas, and would spend hours thinking on how I can make things better. With others, I felt that they are not interested in any input. (but I have it anyway)

Some affiliates develop close relationships with their affiliate managers, talk to them on daily basis, share details about their personal life and more. Some keep it strictly business. It’s natural. Each one of us is different; we connect to different people and have different ways of doing things. It might seem that I recommend all affiliates to become friends with their am’s. I’m not. It’s nice to become friends with people you work with, but it’s really not the point here.

The point is, that it really doesn’t take much to gain all the benefits of this relationship. All you need to do is “to keep the door open”.

With strong affiliate managers, you really don’t need to anything. Just reply from time to time and say “Thank you” if the suggestion is good. Other might need an “invitation”, which will set the base, letting them know what you expect and how they can assist you.

In either case, it doesn’t take much. And the best part is that you can use all those ideas and comments with other programs and other projects as well.

Final Thoughts: Relationships Can Make You Money

It’s not a secret that the size and the amount of traffic you bring, in general and to the specific program, has a major effect on how much time the affiliate manager will invest in you.

If I had to summarize things up (and probably I should…):

New/smaller affiliates: You can get much more info from affiliate managers than you think. Naturally, it won’t happen if you don’t have anything to offer. Nevertheless, if you ask the right questions, you can get valuable information that will help you develop. grow, and make money. Don’t be afraid to try to negotiate better rates, you may not get anything better, but there is nothing lost in trying.

Big/Well established affiliates: In many cases, you probably need to fight the affiliate managers to leave you alone and let you do your work. However, despite the fact that you know your job, succeed and make a lot, there is still valuable info that affiliate manager can give you about their specific brand, which will make you even more successful. And it really doesn’t take much time or effort.

Call To Action Basics

In the affiliate industry having good “Calls To Actions” (CTA’s) is often what separates a website that makes money, from one that doesn’t. It can be easy to lose focus on your Calls To Actions, after all we are constantly fighting to gain more traffic and keep up with the latest promos. While growing your traffic numbers is important, if you are not converting that traffic into revenue, then none of it matters. Remember, if your website has traffic, then it should  be making money!

Below is a short video where I discuss and review the various types of Calls To Actions on affiliate websites. I also share some tips on how you can implement and test CTA’s on your websites to achieve the best results. You should always be reviewing, updating, and testing your CTA’s. Keep in mind that the slightest change can boost your conversion rate exponentially. This is one of the most overlooked aspects of gaming affiliate websites, and once you get in the habit of testing and tweaking your CTA’s, you’ll never look back.

In This Video We Discuss:

  • Basic Types of Calls To Action (CTA)
  • Review Websites CTA Examples
  • Discuss CTA’s Variations
  • Discuss CTA Split Testing Variables
